Remembering Alice Lockmiller

Remembering Alice Lockmiller
Church World Service lost a dear friend when Alice Lockmiller passed away. I met Alice for the first time in September of 2006. During that one visit it was obvious that she was a very generous person. Her apartment contained numerous thank you mementos from causes she supported over her 96 plus years. She was a strong advocate of higher education, holding honorary doctorate degrees from two universities. But education was not her only passion. Her interest in clean water led her to Church World Service.

A successful realtor during her working career, Alice established the Alice Lockmiller Clean Water Endowment with a gift to Church World Service in 2001. When I asked her where she developed this interest she responded, "Pure water is essential to good health." She understood that many issues related to self-sustaining development are rooted in having clean water.

Alice set up her twelfth and final gift annuity with Church World Service in 2006. True to her generosity, most of these annuities actually provide income to other people. Alice directed that, as each annuity matures, the remaining balance would be added to the Alice Lockmiller Clean Water Endowment. Her endowment is invested with half of the annual net income used to provide funding for Church World Service water projects around the world.

We are deeply appreciative of Alice's forethought in establishing her endowment and for her confidence in partnering with Church World Service. As she had intended, Alice's endowment will provide income for Church World Service to use for clean water programs in perpetuity. Thank you Dr. Lockmiller!
