Dr. Reed uses a Gift Annuity to Create an Endowment

Dr. Reed uses a Gift Annuity to Create an Endowment
Church World Service reaches the "Neediest of the Needy"

Sitting on her porch, her faithful companion Bonzo by her side, Dr. Lola Reed reflects, "God has been good to me. I have been blessed all my life." At age 90, she credits her happy and fulfilling life to parents who gave her the four most important gifts a parent can give a child - love, discipline, education and faith. Armed with those gifts, Dr. Reed, who prefers the name "Skip," graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, pursued a residency in pediatrics, and in 1945 started her own medical practice.

Throughout her busy years as a pediatrician, Skip was active in church and community, teaching Sunday school, serving as a deacon and an elder at the church, heading up the county United Fund, and serving on numerous civic boards and committees. Describing herself as a "country person," she has a love of the outdoors and throughout her life has enjoyed hiking, fishing, and swimming. Even today, weather permiting, she swims daily in her outdoor pool.

Always generous with her time, Skip has been equally generous in support of her charitable interests, including Church World Service, where she has been a longtime benefactor. She states that she has been particularly impressed, over the years, by CWS's response to international emergency needs, where the focus is on the "neediest of the needy."

After reviewing her estate plan recently, she contacted Church World Service to learn more about its charitable gift annuity program. She knew that a gift annuity could help CWS reach more people in need, as well as provide her with a fixed income for the rest of her life. After meeting with Ronald Blaum, Director of Gift and Estate Planning, she decided to establish a substantial gift annuity. This annuity will be used to create the "Elsie Stover Reed Endowment" in memory of her mother, whose own joy in giving inspired Skip throughout her life.

With this newsletter issue we welcome Dr. Lola Reed to our Legacy of Hope Society for her generous gift, and thank her for sharing the many blessings of her life with Church World Service!
